watching malaysia vs japan with alang and ateh, i said it s easier to comments but once on field you ll feel the pressure, nervous from very beginning...if unable to cope then silly mistakes will surface.
'what to do then?' asked alang.
'tips...dont see eye to eye when shake hands' i answered with a demonic grin...alang and ateh laughed.
yeap, not having experience in high level sports competiton, but had this lil' experience during my college days...it was sweet.
previously i bumped into an old friend of mine during my boer farm trip up north...we were in the varsity team...to my suprise recently he did mail me one of his old collection about our varsity team news that he still kept.
ha ha ha... it was in the late 80s...as if it was yesterday.
i still remember, it was during the usual weekend local league game when i was approached by the varsity coach , invited for trial...made it to ISU team only when i was in senior year.
playing as leftback...unfortunately marking opponent's right wing...if the right winger is a 'speedy gonzales' type (which always the case), bad news coz then i have to endure a miserable life for the next 90 minutes ha ha ha!
had so much fun with other mates in the backline...fortunately i got this bloke a six footer, kyle baldwin playing as the last man ( the one who's always covering all my mistakes ha ha ha!) and he s damn good defender...bruce beranski playing right back plus another chap, kurt kerns ( kurt cobain look alike, seriously!) was a really good goalkeeper.
did a lot of travelling in the mid west at that point of time with the varsity team during my senior year...we re not the best but not that bad either by winning few tournaments...at that time, university of missouri was the team to beat, the best team in the mid west.
i guess that was my best moment in sports...the first and the last of me experiencing a real proper team set up, had games during light snow, joy of winning, agony of defeat, meeting people and travelling.
back then soccer was not as popular as today in the US...but at varsity level still being watched by quite a sizeable crowd...but to me as if thousands, always nervous before kick start ha ha ha!
'is it? better not to see your opponents' eyes when shake hands?' ateh asking me as if i m fooling.
i didn't answer but again just showing my demonic grin.
ateh was smiling, convinced that i was fooling him...then continued to watch the game.
time flies.....ermm and yes, i dont see eye to eye when shake hands before a game...ha ha ha!
